Children's feet undergo remarkable changes and developments as they progress through various stages of infancy and early childhood. In the pre-crawling stage, babies' feet are flexible and mostly fat pads, allowing them to kick and wiggle freely. As they transition to crawling, their feet adapt to bearing weight, developing arches and strengthening muscles necessary for mobility. Throughout the toddler years, a child's feet continue to evolve, with walking and running becoming primary modes of transportation. During this stage, proper footwear becomes vital to support their growing feet and provide stability. By the time children enter kindergarten and beyond, their feet have typically developed arches, and they exhibit more refined coordination and balance. As they engage in more physical activities and sports, maintaining foot health through wearing well-fitted shoes, regular exercise, and proper hygiene becomes essential. If you have any questions about the development of your child’s feet or what type of shoes to purchase, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can address them.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Daniel Mendoza, DPM of Nashville Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Hammertoe in Kids

Hammertoe, a condition where one or more toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, can affect children as well as adults. It typically occurs due to an imbalance in the toe muscles, often exacerbated by wearing ill-fitting shoes or genetic predisposition. Children with hammertoe may experience discomfort, corns, or calluses, especially when wearing shoes. Treatment options for hammertoe in kids vary depending on the severity of the condition. Non-invasive measures such as wearing roomier footwear, toe exercises, and custom orthotic inserts can provide relief. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct toe alignment. If you have a child who appears to be developing a hammertoe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can assess the severity of the condition in addition to providing interventions and treatment that can help to alleviate discomfort, prevent progression, and ensure optimal foot health.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Daniel Mendoza, DPM from Nashville Podiatry. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Ankle and Foot Injuries in Baseball

Baseball demands agility, speed, and precise footwork, placing significant strain on the lower extremities, particularly the ankles and feet. Ankle sprains, one of the most prevalent injuries, occur when the ligaments supporting the ankle are overstretched or torn due to sudden twists or impacts. Additionally, conditions like Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis can arise from repetitive stress or inadequate foot support, causing pain and discomfort. To prevent these injuries, players should prioritize proper warm-up exercises to prepare muscles and joints for the demands of the game. Wearing well-fitted, supportive footwear designed for baseball can enhance stability and reduce the risk of injury. Maintaining good conditioning and flexibility through regular strength and flexibility training can improve overall resilience. Emphasizing proper technique, such as avoiding over-striding or landing awkwardly, can also help minimize the risk of ankle and foot injuries. If you have injured your foot or ankle while playing baseball, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and relief tips.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Daniel Mendoza, DPM from Nashville Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Bursitis Causes Heel Pain

Bursitis in the heel occurs when the bursae in the foot become inflamed. Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs near the joints that cushion the bones and tendons. This inflammation often results from overuse or excessive pressure on the heel, commonly seen in athletes or individuals who engage in frequent running or jumping. Heel bursitis can cause pain in the back of or deep inside the heel, which may worsen with activity and improve with rest. The pain may also be more pronounced in the morning or after long periods of inactivity. Bursitis can also lead to swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected area. Treatment typically involves resting the foot, taking anti-inflammatory medications, and wearing heel pads or orthotic devices to relieve pressure on the heel. Sometimes exercises are also recommended to strengthen the surrounding muscles and tissues. If conservative treatments fail, corticosteroid injections might be considered to reduce inflammation and pain. Taking steps to manage heel bursitis can prevent the condition from recurring and allow you to return to your regular activities without discomfort. If you have painful heels and suspect bursitis, it is suggested you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Daniel Mendoza, DPM of Nashville Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
