An ingrown toenail happens when the outer edge of the toenail digs into the skin as it grows, most often occurring in the big toenails. It can be extremely painful, red, swollen, and even start oozing. Ingrown toenails can be caused by improperly trimmed nails, heredity, crowding of toes, or even repeated trauma from everyday activities like running and playing basketball.
If you are diabetic or have poor circulation, call our office right away. These conditions can hinder your body's ability to heal itself, and the problem needs to be corrected by taking out a small portion of the nail (a matrixectomy) before your toe becomes infected.
